Employee Spotlight – Stephanie Parmlee

Stephanie joined Vital Decisions in 2017 as a Senior Specialist with a background in home family therapy. She graduated from York College with a BS in Accounting and Villanova University with an MS in Counseling. She was born and raised in Jamaica, and has lived in 5 different countries and visited 15. She’s a proud Air Force veteran, who was recognized by her base commander as Airman of the Quarter during her service.
Fun fact: Stephanie is also one of our employee spotlight interviewers.

☀  How do you find meaning in your work?

I can’t imagine how challenging life is and can be for some of our members and I want to be there for them. Part of the meaning I’ve found in this work has pushed me to advocate for loved ones in my life to support them in ensuring that others close to me have their advanced care planning in place or at the very least are now giving it thought.

It has been wonderful working with Stephanie and watching her grow as a clinician. The empathy and connection she has with our members is invaluable. She is a team player, reliable, and is always striving to improve the work she does with our members in order to ensure they receive the best possible care. It’s clear Stephanie is dedicated to our mission and what we have to offer to the members we work with. She is truly an amazing specialist and it is a pleasure to have her as a part of my team!

☀  What are some the things that have made you successful in your role?

Nothing was more helpful in being successful at Vital Decisions than the support I’ve received from various supervisors over the last few years. My experience of the supervisors here is that they honestly and genuinely care about me and that they are here for me. The level and quality of support makes all the difference.

Stephanie and I started our journey at Vital Decisions together 4 years ago. It has been such a gift to work alongside her and see her grow as a specialist. She is not only an amazing professional, but a wonderful person that I am privileged to call my friend. What I love most about Stephanie is her positive spirit and calming energy.

☀  What makes Vital Decisions different than any other organization you’ve been a part of?

Vital Decisions almost feels too good to be true. I’ve never worked for a company that has such strong aspirations and that continuously strives to accomplish what they say they are going to do. By no means is it a perfect organization, however, when they say they’ll do something, they go ahead and do it. It’s refreshing. Vital Decisions is the first company I’ve experienced that tries to do better and really puts the time, energy, and resources into doing so.

Stephanie is a warm and talented clinician who routinely exceeds expectations in her efforts to serve our clients, as well as helping her colleagues. Stephanie is someone I’m always eager to partner with; not only is she collaborative and creative, she’s also deeply invested in delivering high quality client care. Her work is a gift to this organization.

☀  What values are most important to you when you think about your own career advancement?

For me, it’s more about the experience of growing up close to my mother. She was always someone who was there for others. She’s the reason I wanted to go into counseling. I wanted to be just like her in the way she was there for other people. I also really value my integrity and my desire to always be genuine and authentic. I push myself to always self-reflect and continuously strive to do my best.

Stephanie is such a joy to work with because she has a way of making things more lighthearted. I know that anyone I engage who is assigned to Stephanie is in great hands because she’s so caring and will work incredibly hard for them. It’s been amazing working so closely with Stephanie over these last few years because I’ve been able to learn so much from her. Stephanie is great at being able to speak to the “other side of things” or helping everyone see a different perspective. Thanks for always being you, Stephanie!

☀  What’s a lesson you feel like you’ve learned in working here?

Patience. I’ve grown tremendously in my patience. I’ve had some positive experiences at Vital Decisions and some really challenging experiences. It was my ability to grow in the area of patience that allowed me to stay and work through those challenges and I’m glad I did.

Stephanie brings great talent and gifts to Vital Decisions. Her caring and compassionate way with her clients, her thoughtful and engaged commitment to our workplace culture, and her willingness to share her ideas and thoughts -she inspires all of us. We are grateful for her service to our country as well prior to joining Vital Decisions!
